From the The Nongqai - September 1925 "The picture depicts the opening scenes of the Natal Native Rebellion in 1906. The top photograph portrays the public execution at Richmond of 12 Natives who were concerned in the murder of Sub- Insp. Hunt and Trooper Armstrong. This scene was telescopically photographed in consequence of an order prohibiting the use of cameras at the execution. The bottom photograph shows the actual skull of the Rebel leader Chief Bambata, who was slain at the Mome Gorge, and depicted for identification purposes. His skull is the only relic of a Rebellion which cost the Government L740000 to surpress. This subject is referred to in the article entitled "Censored""

"African men, probably prisoners during the Bambatha Uprising, circa 1906. The armed guard was probably a member of the Natal Police. The man seated against the tree in the foreground may have been Chief (Inkosi) Messeni and the man opposite him could have been Inkosi Ndlovu kaTimuni."
